Hello all you new volunteers (and those of you thinking about volunteering)!!!
We are so excited that you have read about Small Change and are signed up to participate. You may have a few questions as to how we work. We are run by a small group of moms all with young children. Each month during the school year I send out an email to everyone who has registered to receive info from Small Change, to let you know what the service project for that month will be and a day to sign up by. All you have to do is reply to the email to sign up. We know someone may get sick or it may just be a bad day and you may not be able to attend at last minute. No worries. We appreciate an email if you know in advance in case we have a waiting list for the project. Some agencies can only let so many people volunteer at once. Don't worry if you need to bring a baby along in a carrier or your two year old has a melt down in the middle of the project and you need to go. My 3 year old would still prefer I attend to him more and lead the project less and my 5 year old tries to take over! We have lots of fun though and when we get home and talk to the kids they do seem to understand and feel good about being helpers.
We try as much as we can to create projects so the kids may help other kids. A parent must always be there and participate with their child. Dads do come too but usually it is mostly moms. We are only in Dallas and most of the agencies are located around Downtown or South Dallas.
We also have a monthly craft at 5 Dallas Public Libraries. It is free and the kids make one craft to keep and one to leave for us to give to that months benefiting agency. You can go to the Craft page on our website to see locations and times. I would recommend calling the library before you go just to make sure it is still on. Some of the libraries are going through a transition and the dates might change on us.
